Why teach computing?

Computing knowledge & skills is at the heart of modern life and enables  the 21st Century economy to beat. It is essential for children to build confidence, knowledge and understanding of the way technologies work. They should understand how internet-connected systems can be employed - this will give them the skills to adapt and be flexible to the potential for rapid change over coming years.

How do we teach computing?

We use digital learning Cornwall to help us plan, structure and ensure coverage of the computing curriculum. This framework is mapped into three broad strands:

Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy.

Here, The National Curriculum's Computing content is used as a starting point- yet lengthy objectives are broken down into manageable, sequenced chunks for children over the six year groups.  Computing is often taught with a connection to our curriculum projects, which helps children see and learn from the interconnectivity of life and this area.

Progression is based on flashbacks to previous knowledge and skill which are then expanded upon, allowing children to build secure foundations in their long-term understanding of Computing. teaching of computing provides children with a broad, balanced set of learning experiences. We use a variety of hardware and software which create many easy-to-access, learning experiences.

What difference does learning Computing make?
The computing curriculum offers powerful benefits for young people. Early use of digital technology improves children’s language skills and promotes social development and creativity.  Having a deeper understanding of computing also helps students to be better equipped when tackling maths, science and engineering problems.

Children will:
  • Learn how to use technology safely and respectfully
  • Develop problem solving skills
  • Develop persistence in the face of initial difficulties
  • Become more familiar and efficient with a range of technology
  • Prepare children for later life, digital skills are a universal requirement in the job market
